Wellness retreats: the new family holiday? La Zambra review

Could a luxurious wellness break actually work for a family with four children? One mother puts La Zambra in Spain to the test, finding laidback luxury and genuinely family-friendly facilities.

  • La Zambra in Andalusia offers a rare blend of five-star spa and children's activities.
  • Direct flights from UK airports to Málaga take under three hours.
  • Family wellness breaks are growing in popularity among British travellers seeking a balance of relaxation and childcare.

When Zoe Griffin checked into La Zambra, a five-star resort in the Andalusian hills of southern Spain, she was sceptical that a wellness retreat could ever work for a family of six. But after a week with her four children, she has become a convert. The resort, part of the prestigious The Unbound Collection by Hyatt, offers a rare combination: a world-class spa and a dedicated kids' club, all set among olive groves and mountain views.

For British families, the practicalities are straightforward. Málaga Airport is a 25-minute drive away, with direct flights from Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester, and Birmingham starting from around £80 return in off-peak season. The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) currently has no travel warnings for mainland Spain, but advises checking local restrictions before departure. Standard travel insurance is essential; policies covering cancellation, medical expenses, and repatriation are recommended, especially if booking non-refundable spa treatments or kids' club sessions.

La Zambra's appeal lies in its ability to cater to all ages without sacrificing atmosphere. The kids' club (for ages 4–12) runs daily from 10am to 6pm, with activities such as cooking classes, nature walks, and pool games, costing £35 per child per day. Meanwhile, adults can book treatments in the 2,000 sq m spa, including a hammam and hydrotherapy pool, from £90 per session. Accommodation ranges from suites with private plunge pools (from £350 per night in low season) to interconnecting rooms ideal for larger families.

Griffin noted that the resort's 'wellness' ethos extends beyond the spa menu. Yoga classes are held at dawn on a terrace overlooking the Mediterranean, and the restaurant offers a children's menu alongside a tasting menu featuring local produce. 'It's the first holiday where I've actually felt rested,' she told UKPulse Media. 'The kids were so busy having fun that they didn't want to leave the club.'

The trend towards family wellness breaks is growing among British travellers. According to recent data from ABTA, 38% of UK families now prioritise health and wellbeing activities when choosing a holiday. For families considering such a trip, experts advise booking early – particularly during school holidays – and checking the FCDO's travel advice for any updates on local health guidelines. A valid passport is required for all travellers, and as of 2025, British citizens do not need a visa for stays up to 90 days in Spain.

Why this matters: British families increasingly seek holidays that combine genuine relaxation with activities for children, and La Zambra represents a growing niche that could reshape how UK parents approach school-break travel.

What this means for you: What this means for you: If you're a parent tired of chaotic family holidays, a wellness retreat like La Zambra could offer a genuine break without leaving the kids behind. Budget for at least £350 per night plus extras for kids' club and spa treatments.
