The UK government has launched the first procurement competitions under its £100 million Sovereign AI R&D Procurement Scheme. This initiative aims to support British AI companies in developing solutions for some of the UK's biggest challenges, from boosting NHS productivity to strengthening national security.
Chancellor John Healey MP announced the launch, stating that the competition will ensure more of AI's benefits are felt across every UK postcode. The scheme is designed to help innovative British start-ups compete, regardless of their size, by removing barriers such as the need for large turnover or extensive track records, and offering upfront payments where appropriate.
Successful companies will retain the intellectual property they create, allowing them to develop commercial products beyond the pilot stage. The first four competitions focus on NHS productivity, driving compute efficiency, integrating AI across defence mission environments, and agent security and resilience testing.
Additionally, the UK plans to open its AI Economics Institute to international cooperation with G7 countries. This collaboration will focus on information and evidence sharing to strengthen the understanding of AI's economic impacts.
