Primary school student Yuki Kurihara, aged 11, has made a flying start as the youngest athlete at this year's Asian Games. Competing in eSports, he beat opponents significantly older than himself in Japan on Thursday.

Kurihara plays Puyo Puyo Champions, a puzzle game where players clear coloured blobs to create chain reactions. He topped Group A after beating all four of his opponents.

The 11-year-old secured his place on the Japan team when he was 10. He turned professional in April, two months before his 11th birthday, after winning Sega's Puyo Puyo Grand Prix Final in February.

Kurihara will attempt to win a gold medal on Saturday. He could become the youngest ever medallist at the Asian Games; the current record is held by Indonesia's Bunga Nyimas, who won bronze in skateboarding aged 12 in 2018.
