A proposed amendment to the representation of the people bill, which is due to return to parliament next week, calls for the establishment of an independent national commission on electoral reform. This call has been endorsed by 185 MPs.
Among the supporters, 98 Labour MPs have signed the amendment. Downing Street has indicated that the Prime Minister supports reform but accepts there is no mandate to legislate before a general election, in deference to the manifesto inherited from Sir Keir Starmer.
The current first past the post (FPTP) system is not used for electing the UK’s devolved assemblies or England’s regional mayors. Opinion polls suggest Labour, the Conservatives, and Reform UK are currently polling between one-fifth and one-third of the national vote share.
