An initiative from 1979 that saw Handsworth residents in inner-city Birmingham take their own photographs is now seeking funding for a book. Photographers Derek Bishton, Brian Homer, and John Reardon established an impromptu studio in the street, inviting neighbours to participate.

Using long cable releases, participants were able to decide how they wished to be represented. The project's original aim was to challenge negative media images of Handsworth and its community. A Kickstarter fund has been set up, in collaboration with Dewi Lewis Publishing, to compile these images into a book.
