Hartlepool Borough Council has approved planning for the Environment Agency's £25 million Greatham North East flood alleviation scheme. The project aims to reduce flood risk for Hartlepool, combat coastal erosion, and restore intertidal habitats.
Construction is scheduled to commence in early 2027 and is anticipated to take approximately two years to complete. The scheme is designed to manage flood risk over the next 50 years.
The project involves building a new 1.5km long embankment at Greenabella Marsh and breaching the existing Greenabella embankment to enhance flood resilience. Repair works are also planned for Greatham Creek embankment.
Joe Reed, Project Manager for the Environment Agency, stated that the project will improve the area's resilience to climate change and create new habitats for wildlife.
