Thirty-three UK nationals are among hundreds feared missing following a deadly flash flood and mudslides near the Nepal-Tibet border, Nepal's Tourism Board has confirmed. The incidents occurred in the Rasuaw region on Wednesday morning, resulting in at least 95 deaths in Nepal and three in Tibet, according to Chinese state media.
A total of 403 people from 26 different countries are missing, comprising 61 Nepali nationals and 341 foreign nationals. The UK Foreign Office stated it is working closely with Nepalese authorities regarding reports of missing British nationals and has advised Brits to follow local guidance and remain alert.
Alpine Eco Trek, an excursion company, reported that 12 British nationals on one of its tours in the region, along with two Irish nationals, were on an excursion across the Nepal-Tibet border and are believed to be missing. The ages of the missing British citizens range from 13 to 65, according to the company's travel logs.
Preliminary information suggests the flood was caused by an earthquake triggering an avalanche, with melted snow pouring into the Bhote Koshi river. The UK embassy in Nepal, in a joint statement with other nations, urged British nationals in Nepal to exercise caution in affected areas.
