Ministers and representatives from 40 states are gathering today at the UN headquarters for The Hague Group’s Extraordinary Meeting in Defence of International Law. This meeting follows recent developments concerning the International Criminal Court (ICC) and international legal order.
Earlier this week, Washington reportedly drew up sanctions against the ICC, targeting its bank accounts, software, insurers, and staff. This occurred as the UN General Assembly’s high-level meetings began on Monday.
On Thursday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is wanted by the ICC for war crimes, addressed the UN rostrum. Palestinian officials were reportedly absent from the UN meetings after being denied travel visas by the United States.
The International Court of Justice has previously ruled Israel's occupation unlawful and instructed states against providing aid or assistance. The General Assembly had given Israel 12 months to end the occupation, a deadline that passed a year ago.
