A new physical device aims to tackle smartphone addiction by forcing users to get up and scan a key before they can open distracting apps like Instagram or TikTok. The Autonomous Key, which costs just £7 (around $9), uses near-field communication (NFC) technology to lock chosen applications until the key is tapped against the phone. Each unlock session lasts up to 60 minutes before the apps automatically re-lock, turning a mindless scroll into a deliberate act that requires physical effort.
Unlike traditional screen-time apps that rely on notifications or timers—which many users ignore—the Autonomous Key creates a tangible barrier. Users can leave the small, three-inch key in another room, at the office, or even at the gym, making impulsive app access far more inconvenient. The device works with Android 8.0 or later and iOS 15 or later, and one key can be paired with multiple phones, making it suitable for families or users with several devices.
The companion app offers AI-powered insights into unlocking habits, tracking frequency, session duration, and peak temptation times. The AI adopts a deliberately sassy personality; for example, if a user repeatedly unlocks apps immediately after locking them, it might suggest the key was not placed far enough away. Notably, there are no subscription fees or premium tiers—all features are included for the one-off cost of the key.
However, the device has limitations. During testing, the NFC scan sometimes required multiple attempts to register, meaning it may not be ideal for locking essential apps such as messaging or email. If the key is lost while apps are locked, the current workaround is to uninstall and reinstall the companion app; if apps are already unlocked, users can remove the key from their account. The company says a backup unlock method is in development for a future update.
For UK businesses and consumers, the device highlights a growing market for physical digital detox tools. The UK's Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) has increasingly scrutinised addictive design in apps, while the EU's AI Act may influence how such companion AI features are regulated. Experts warn that while physical blockers can reduce screen time, they should not replace broader digital wellbeing strategies. The Autonomous Key is currently in beta, shipping in five colours, and offers a low-cost entry point for those seeking to break compulsive phone habits.
