Robert Solomon, aged 71, is now working as an assistant buyer in produce at an independent market in New York. He describes this role as the best employment he has experienced.
Solomon's career shift began during the pandemic when his hours were reduced at a nonprofit organisation where he performed building management and tech support. He took on an additional job at a food cooperative, assisting with stocking.
In 2022, he left the nonprofit to pursue grocery positions. Solomon notes that he is working harder now than he has since his 30s, finding the work physically engaging and creatively stimulating. He also reports feeling mentally quieter and physically stronger, with less knee pain.
