The horror icon returns! Paramount Pictures has landed a deal with the estate of the late Wes Craven to reboot 'A Nightmare On Elm Street', rekindling the terror that captivated audiences in 1984. The original film introduced the unholy figure of Freddy Krueger, a monstrous child killer who stalks teenagers in their dreams, leaving an indelible mark on pop culture.
With nine films under its belt, including the memorable crossover event 'Freddy Vs Jason' in 2003 and the ill-fated 2010 reboot starring Jackie Earle Haley as Krueger, this franchise is ripe for a reimagining. Crucially, Wes Craven's estate has retained the rights to the original film since 2019, with his widow Iya Labunka and son Jonathan Craven at the helm of production. The new reboot will be released under Paramount's new genre label, Paramount Primal.
In a statement via Variety, Iya Labunka exclaimed: "We're chuffed to bring Wes Craven’s Nightmare On Elm Street to a fresh generation of horror fans! We know he'd have been over the moon to see how much terror is now part of our cultural landscape. Get ready for the next chapter in this iconic series!"
The partnership between Paramount and Wes Craven's estate comes as the former acquires New Line Cinema, the original distributors of 'Nightmare On Elm Street', with international distribution rights still held by New Line's parent company, Warner Bros Discovery. Details on the cast and crew for this much-anticipated reboot remain under wraps, leaving fans to speculate which actor will breathe new life into the role of Freddy Krueger.
