A2RL, the pioneering racing league where AI takes on human drivers, is gearing up for its most thrilling chapter yet: a historic international debut at the iconic Imola circuit in Italy. On September 5, 2026, five fully autonomous supercars will face off against some of the toughest tracks in motorsport, pushing the boundaries of artificial intelligence like never before.
For two seasons, A2RL has been a hotbed for testing AI under extreme conditions at the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi. Now, as it expands globally, its inaugural international race represents a pivotal moment in the championship's growth. Reigning champions TUM from Germany are set to take on Italian teams Unimore Racing and PoliMOVE, who secured their spots with impressive performances last season.
But that's not all – two more teams, Kinetiz from the UAE and Constructor Racing from Germany, will battle it out in qualification events ahead of the main event. The choice of Imola is no coincidence: this legendary track demands precision, strategy, and lightning-fast decision-making from its drivers – qualities that autonomous systems must also master.
For ASPIRE, the grand challenges division behind A2RL, this international debut marks a major milestone in their mission to create a global championship for fully autonomous racecars. H.E. Faisal Al Bannai, Secretary General of the Advanced Technology Research Council, hails it as a testament to the UAE's commitment to turning research into reality – and accelerating progress in autonomous mobility worldwide.
A2RL has made tremendous strides since its inception, evolving from a four-car showdown into a six-car Grand Final with speeds topping 250 km/h. And what's more remarkable is that the gap between AI and human drivers has narrowed dramatically: just 1.58 seconds separates them now – down from a whopping 10 seconds in 2024.
