Abbie Donnelly has secured a historic bronze medal at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham, becoming the first British woman to achieve a podium finish in the marathon at this event. The 29-year-old from Lincoln completed the challenging eight-lap city centre route in 2:27.33.

Donnelly's individual success also played a role in Great Britain's team gold medal, awarded based on the best three finishers from each nation. Natasha Wilson finished fifth and Rose Harvey 14th to contribute to the team victory. This marks the first time a British athlete has won an individual marathon medal at the European Championships since Ian Thompson's men's gold in 1974.

Donnelly described her achievement as an 'out-of-body experience', crediting the home crowd for their support. She is now set to return to her studies, with her PhD due for completion in six weeks.
