Reproductive Freedom for All, one of the oldest abortion rights groups in the US, has endorsed Troy Jackson, the Democratic nominee in Maine's US Senate race. The group is backing Jackson in his challenge against Susan Collins, the five-term Republican incumbent.
Collins's campaign has faced scrutiny for her 2018 vote to confirm conservative justice Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court. Kavanaugh later joined the majority opinion in 2022 that overturned Roe v Wade, a landmark abortion rights protection.
Mini Timmaraju, president of Reproductive Freedom for All, stated that flipping the Maine Senate race is crucial for securing a Senate majority, which she believes is necessary to restore a federal right to abortion. Timmaraju is scheduled to join Jackson on Wednesday in Brunswick for the launch of the campaign's Women for Troy coalition.
Jackson, a former state senate president, previously held positions restricting abortion access but has since reversed his stance, expressing regret for his earlier views. He has held a 100% rating from Planned Parenthood since 2017 and co-sponsored legislation in 2023 to expand abortion access.
