Adam Azim, the undefeated British light-welterweight contender, has made clear his ambition to challenge for the IBF world title rather than pursue a domestic showdown with Dalton Smith. The 23-year-old from Slough, who boasts a perfect 12-0 record with eight knockouts, is targeting a return to the ring in September or October this year.
Speaking about his plans, Azim said: “I want to be world champion. The IBF belt is the one I’m looking at. Dalton Smith is a good fighter, but I want the biggest names. I want to test myself against the best.” Azim’s promoter, Boxxer, has been in discussions regarding potential opponents for the autumn, with the IBF champion Subriel Matias currently holding the title after his victory over Jeremias Ponce in February.
Azim, who turned professional in 2020, has rapidly climbed the domestic rankings. His most recent outing saw him stop Ohara Davies in the eighth round in February, a performance that drew praise from pundits. The British Boxing Board of Control has yet to sanction a mandatory challenger for the IBF belt, but Azim’s team are confident of securing a final eliminator or direct title shot.
Dalton Smith, the 26-year-old from Sheffield, holds the British and Commonwealth titles at 140lbs and has been linked with Azim for several months. Smith’s promoter, Matchroom, has expressed interest in the all-British clash, but Azim’s camp have prioritised a world title route. “Dalton is a great fighter, but I don’t need to fight him to prove I’m the best. I want to fight for a world title,” Azim added.
The light-welterweight division has been revitalised in recent years, with champions across all four major sanctioning bodies. Azim’s team are monitoring the IBF’s mandatory cycle closely. A win in September or October could propel him into a world title fight by early 2025. Source: Boxxer Promotions
