Mixed martial artist Adam Darby, from Dublin, has secured a UFC contract after more than a decade of effort. He achieved this milestone by becoming the first Irish fighter to earn a UFC contract through Dana White's Contender Series.
Darby (8-1) earned his place on the UFC roster with a TKO victory against American Patrick Rivera (13-5) in Las Vegas on 1 September. The welterweight's win came in the third round via doctor stoppage, and he was one of five fighters to be awarded a UFC contract that night.
Darby reflected on his achievement, stating, "I was just sitting there thinking to myself, well, that's 10-plus years of work all coming to fruition." His journey included overcoming a 20-second defeat and a 17-month absence due to a serious hand injury.
Darby hopes his success will inspire future generations of Irish fighters. He is now aiming for his UFC debut before the end of the year.
