ADTRAN Shares Plunge on Weak Q2 Results and Downgraded Outlook

ADTRAN Holdings shares tumbled over 20% after the company reported disappointing second-quarter earnings and slashed its full-year revenue guidance. The sell-off reflects ongoing challenges in the telecom networking equipment sector.

  • ADTRAN shares fell more than 20% in early trading after Q2 results missed analyst expectations.
  • The company cut its full-year 2026 revenue forecast, citing slower demand from telecom operators.
  • The broader technology and telecom equipment sector also faced pressure, with the FTSE 100 tech index down 1.2%.

ADTRAN Holdings, the US-based networking and telecommunications equipment supplier, saw its share price collapse by more than 20% on Wednesday after the company published weaker-than-expected second-quarter earnings and downgraded its revenue outlook for the remainder of the year.

The company reported Q2 revenue of $245m, below the consensus estimate of $272m, and adjusted earnings per share of $0.12, compared with the forecast $0.18. Management attributed the shortfall to a slowdown in orders from major telecom operators, who are delaying capital expenditure on fibre and broadband infrastructure amid macroeconomic uncertainty.

ADTRAN now expects full-year 2026 revenue in the range of $950m to $1.05bn, down from its previous guidance of $1.1bn to $1.2bn. The news triggered a broad sell-off in the telecom equipment sector, with shares of rivals Nokia and Ericsson also falling 2.1% and 1.8% respectively in European trading.

For UK investors and pension holders, the weakness in ADTRAN is a reminder of the cyclical nature of the telecoms supply chain. Many UK-listed funds have exposure to global technology and communications equipment stocks through passive tracker funds or actively managed portfolios. The FTSE 100's technology sector index fell 1.2% on the day, while the FTSE 250, which includes several telecoms and infrastructure firms, dropped 0.6%.

Analysts at Morgan Stanley noted that the guidance cut signals a broader caution across the industry, with telecom operators tightening spending on network upgrades. 'This is not an ADTRAN-specific issue—it reflects a wider pullback in carrier capex,' they said in a note. 'Investors should brace for further volatility in the sector until demand signals improve.'

Why this matters: ADTRAN's slump highlights risks in the global telecom equipment supply chain, which can affect UK-listed funds and pension portfolios with exposure to the technology and infrastructure sectors.

What this means for you: What this means for you: If you hold UK tracker funds or pension investments with exposure to global technology or telecoms stocks, this sell-off may reduce the value of your holdings in the short term. However, diversified portfolios are less affected by single-company news.
