A new study has shed light on the cheapest city breaks in Europe, with tourist expenses soaring by more than 20% in seven popular destinations since 2025. According to the research, the increases in prices have been driven by a surge in demand and a shortage of accommodation options.
The study, conducted by a leading travel organisation, analysed data from over 500 European cities to determine the most affordable destinations for UK travellers. The results reveal that some popular city breaks may no longer be as budget-friendly as they once were.
However, there are still many affordable options for UK travellers. The top five cheapest city breaks in Europe are: Budapest, Hungary; Krakow, Poland; Prague, Czech Republic; Porto, Portugal; and Sofia, Bulgaria. These cities offer a wealth of cultural attractions, historic landmarks, and delicious food at a fraction of the cost of more popular destinations.
So, where can you go for less? Budapest, the Hungarian capital, tops the list with average accommodation prices starting from £25 per night. Krakow, Poland's second-largest city, offers a similar experience with prices from £30 per night. Prague, the Czech capital, is another affordable option with prices from £35 per night. Porto, Portugal's second-largest city, offers a charming blend of medieval architecture and coastal scenery from £40 per night. Finally, Sofia, Bulgaria's capital, provides a rich history and culture with prices from £45 per night.
UK travellers looking to visit these destinations should be aware that some cities may require a visa. Check with the relevant authorities to determine visa requirements and ensure you have the necessary documentation.
Travel insurance is also essential when visiting any foreign destination. Make sure you have adequate cover for medical expenses, cancellations, and delays.
