Sharif Ahmadzai, a 26-year-old Afghan boxer, has been arrested in connection with the death of Scottish aid worker Elisabeth Jane Ross in Greece. Ms Ross, 38, was found in a suitcase in an abandoned building in the Kypseli district of Athens on 18 July, several days after she was reported missing.

Police said Ms Ross, from Edinburgh, arrived in Greece on 26 June and had been volunteering with a refugee support group in Athens. She reportedly told Greek friends she was going to Kypseli to meet "American friends" on 15 July.

Greece's policing union stated that Mr Ahmadzai had a key to the apartment where Ms Ross was staying. They also said they have verified footage that appears to show Mr Ahmadzai carrying a suitcase believed to contain the body. Police also claim the arrested man used Ms Ross's bank cards to withdraw money.

Officers reportedly recovered a replica pistol and a knife during searches of Mr Ahmadzai's home. A toxicology report is being fast-tracked to identify the cause of death, according to police. Mr Ahmadzai is expected to appear in court in Athens on Wednesday.
