The chief executives of OpenAI, Anthropic, and Hugging Face have urged the United Nations to establish international coordination and common risk evaluation standards for artificial intelligence (AI). Sam Altman of OpenAI, Dario Amodei of Anthropic, and Clement Delangue of Hugging Face all spoke to the UN on Wednesday, 23 September 2026, emphasising the rapid pace of AI development and the risks it poses to society.
Altman called for national and international AI standards to measure capabilities, assess risks, implement safeguards, and maintain human oversight. He also advocated for speedy incident reporting, classification, and protocols to learn from failures. Amodei echoed these concerns, stating that poorly managed AI could pose a risk to humanity and called for more stringent safety standards, adding that managing these risks is a global concern.
Conversely, Michael Kratsios, a technology advisor to US President Donald Trump, rejected the idea of new AI regulation at the same UN conference. While acknowledging the increasing speed of AI development and its risks, Kratsios stated this was not sufficient reason to pause development or impose new global governance structures.
