AI Coding Startup Cursor Launches India-Specific Subscription Ahead of SpaceX Acquisition

AI coding startup Cursor has introduced its first country-specific subscription in India, priced at ₹649 a month, ahead of its expected acquisition by SpaceX.

  • Cursor has launched a new ₹649-a-month subscription, Cursor Start, specifically for the Indian market.
  • India is currently Cursor's third-largest global market, with its user base tripling over the past year.
  • The move comes weeks before Cursor's expected acquisition by SpaceX is set to close in Q3.

AI coding startup Cursor has launched its first country-specific subscription in India, named Cursor Start, priced at ₹649 a month (approximately $7). This new offering is significantly lower than Cursor’s standard $20-a-month Pro subscription.

The company stated that India is its third-largest market globally and has seen its user base in the country more than triple over the past year. Simon Green, Cursor’s head of Asia-Pacific and Japan, indicated that India’s large pool of software engineering talent made it the first market for localized pricing.

Cursor Start includes access to Cursor’s Composer 2.5 and Grok 4.5 models, along with higher usage limits than the free tier. The plan is designed for developers needing more AI-assisted coding capacity without upgrading to the full Pro subscription, which offers additional features and access to frontier AI models from providers like OpenAI and Anthropic.

The India-specific pricing is intended to be commercially sustainable, built around Cursor’s own AI models, which have lower operating costs. Cursor is also expanding its presence in India with new hires, including sales and technical support staff, and is building a government affairs office.

This expansion comes weeks before Cursor's expected acquisition by Elon Musk's SpaceX, in a $60 billion all-stock deal, is set to close in Q3. Cursor will continue to operate independently until the transaction is finalised.

Why this matters: This move highlights the growing importance of India as a major market for AI and software development, with global companies tailoring services to attract users in the region.
