Searches for properties featuring air conditioning on Rightmove have more than doubled this summer, showing a 104% increase compared to the same period last year. This rise comes as new research suggests households are increasingly aware of how their homes perform in hot weather.
A survey of 1,062 adults by Rightmove found that only 11% believe their home remains very comfortable during hot weather, while 45% report their property struggles to stay cool. The findings indicate that hotter summers are starting to influence future home-moving decisions, with 87% stating a home's ability to stay cool is important when selecting their next property.
To manage rising temperatures, 56% of households have already added blinds, curtains, or window film. Almost half (48%) have installed a fan, and 38% have improved insulation. Additionally, 61% would consider installing air conditioning, though only 12% have already done so.
Colleen Babcock, Rightmove's property expert, noted that recent heatwaves appear to be influencing how people view their homes, with more movers seeking properties that already have air conditioning or considering installing it themselves. Mark Wiggin of Mark Wiggin Estate Agents observed growing interest in features like air source heat pumps, solar panels, and air conditioning, particularly from overseas buyers.
