The accelerating capabilities of artificial intelligence are raising significant questions about education and future skills, according to Daniel Susskind, who studies AI's societal impact. Susskind, a father of three, highlighted personal experiences with AI's rapid advancements.
He recounted using ChatGPT to generate a Dr Seuss-style story in seconds, based on a decades-old idea. While not perfect, the AI provided a creative starting point. More strikingly, Susskind and his family listened to an educational podcast, 'History's Not Boring', for some time before discovering it was entirely AI-generated, with no human narrators.
This rapid progress is challenging conventional wisdom, particularly the concept of "future-proofing" skills. For example, in 2013, then-Prime Minister David Cameron announced that all primary and secondary school children in England would learn to code, a policy aimed at equipping them for the 21st century. However, by January 2026, Anthropic reported that 90% of the code for its AI coding assistant, Claude Code, was written by AI itself. This suggests that skills once considered protective against technological disruption are becoming redundant even before students leave school.
Teachers are reportedly concerned that current teaching methods may no longer be effective, while parents question what their children truly learn when using AI for problem-solving. Employers are also doubting whether traditional educational achievements remain useful indicators of young people's capabilities.
