A devastating boating disaster occurred in San Francisco Bay on Tuesday when a pontoon boat involved in a memorial service capsized, leaving one person dead and three missing. The tragedy unfolded near Alcatraz Island, a former federal prison known for its treacherous waters.
According to the US Coast Guard, the vessel was carrying 20 family members and friends who were paying tribute to a loved one. The boat's motor was still running when rescuers arrived, leaking fuel into the water. Witnesses described 'rough seas' at the time of the incident.
The search for the missing individuals has been ongoing since Tuesday afternoon, with rescuers using thermal imaging, tide prediction, and modeling to guide their efforts. Despite the challenges posed by the cold and fast-moving waters, authorities have cumulatively scoured 950 sq nautical miles of the bay.
US Coast Guard Captain Jared S Toczko acknowledged that there is a possibility the missing individuals may still be alive, but also expressed concern that some could have been trapped inside the boat. The owners of the vessel, John and Miriam Boisa, have declined to comment on the incident.
