The Rt Hon Alex Norris MP has been sworn in as Lord Chancellor at the Royal Courts of Justice. During his swearing-in speech, Mr Norris reaffirmed his commitment to the duties of the office, which include respecting the rule of law, defending the independence of the judiciary, and ensuring the provision of resources for the efficient support of the courts.
Mr Norris highlighted the importance of strong and trusted institutions, stating that trust is earned when power is exercised fairly and consistently. He also mentioned the Government's commitment to an international rules-based order, including the European Convention on Human Rights.
He acknowledged the distinct constitutional functions of Parliament and the judiciary, noting that Parliament makes the law while judges interpret and apply it. Mr Norris also expressed concern about attacks on judges in some serious cases.
