Alexia Putellas, the two-time Ballon d’Or winner, captained London City Lionesses to a statement 2-1 victory over Manchester United in their Women’s Super League season opener today. The match, held at a sold-out Bromley FC, marked Putellas's debut as captain for the team.
The Lionesses, under coach Eder Maestre, were on the front foot from the start, dominating possession and creating numerous chances. They broke the deadlock in the ninth minute when Alanna Kennedy's header from a Janni Thomsen corner was turned into her own net by Manchester United's Julia Zigiotti Olme. Daniëlle van de Donk then extended the lead, flicking a cross from Delphine Cascarino into the far corner.
Manchester United, managed by Eva Olid, registered a late consolation goal deep into added time through Simi Awujo. However, it was not enough to dampen the enthusiasm for London City's emphatic display, which was broadcast live on Sky Sports.
