A new megapoll conducted by the Messina Group (TMG) has found that almost half of all voters, 49%, support rejoining the European Union. This aligns with Prime Minister Andy Burnham's personal preference to rejoin the bloc after the next election.
The TMG poll, which surveyed 11,461 people between 12-24 September, also indicated that if the Prime Minister were to offer a fresh referendum and campaign for re-entry, Labour's vote share could increase by as much as seven points.
Mr Burnham used his first Labour conference speech as leader on Tuesday to announce a review of options for Britain's future relationship with Europe, subsequently adding that these should include rejoining entirely. However, some cabinet ministers are privately urging caution due to concerns about reopening Brexit divides.
The research also found that 52.4% of people believe the UK was wrong to leave the EU, while 29.7% thought it was right. Additionally, 54.9% considered Brexit a failure, compared to 12.2% who saw it as a success.
