Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has affirmed his strategy for seamlessly integrating club-record signing Morgan Rogers into the squad, specifically highlighting his intention to pair the midfielder with fellow England international Cole Palmer. Rogers, who became the most expensive British player of all time following his £117 million transfer from Aston Villa last week, is currently on holiday after representing England at the recent World Cup.
Despite missing the initial stages of Chelsea's pre-season tour in Sydney, Alonso expressed confidence in the 24-year-old's ability to adapt quickly. "In that position we needed an important player and I'm sure there were not many better options than Morgan Rogers," Alonso stated. He added, "You need players who can have that almost instant impact and I'm sure Morgan won't need much time to adapt to the club, the system and his team-mates. That was the idea, to get a top player, and Morgan is one of them." Rogers has committed his future to Chelsea with a six-year contract, including an option for an additional year.
The prospect of Rogers and Palmer playing together has generated considerable excitement, particularly given their close friendship off the pitch. Both players have previously spoken about their desire to play alongside each other. Alonso confirmed he has a clear vision for their partnership, saying, "I have a plan. I have an idea. I can see them linking really well. We need to have a good mix. If we get that balance right and those special players in the right positions, with good control, then we will be more competitive with and without the ball."
Chelsea's aggressive transfer activity extends beyond Rogers. The club is also reportedly on the verge of announcing the £52 million signing of French international defender Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace. The 26-year-old would represent Chelsea's oldest acquisition since 2022. Alonso emphasised the club's focus on building a balanced squad: "We want a squad with the right balance between quality and mentality. Those things need to match in terms of maturity, but I think we are starting the new season with good energy. That's important."
The Blues have already secured several other new players, including winger Geovany Quenda from Sporting, striker Emmanuel Emegha from Strasbourg, and full-back Marco Palestra from Atalanta. Midfielder Valentin Barco, also from Strasbourg, is expected to join in the coming weeks. These additions are set to swell Chelsea's squad to nearly 40 players, indicating that a significant number of sales will be necessary before the transfer window closes. Alonso acknowledged this, stating, "We need to know that there will probably still be some movement. We need to be flexible and quick to act. The main thing is that we have a clear idea, a clear plan that we have built. It will probably change before the transfer window closes."
