Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has expressed confidence in his strategy to integrate new signing Morgan Rogers alongside existing star Cole Palmer, following Rogers' monumental £117 million transfer from Aston Villa. The move, completed last week, makes the 24-year-old England international the most expensive British player in history, signing a contract that extends until 2033.
Alonso lauded Rogers as an "ideal" acquisition for the West London club, which is seeking to rebound from a turbulent, trophyless season that saw them finish 10th in the Premier League and miss out on European football. Speaking ahead of Chelsea's pre-season friendly against Western Sydney Wanderers, the Spanish manager stated, "In that position, we needed an important player, and I'm sure that there were not many more better options than Morgan. It means a lot for everyone."
The 44-year-old manager believes the close friendship and existing understanding between Rogers and Palmer, both England teammates, will be crucial. "I have a plan. I have an idea. I can see them linking really well," Alonso remarked. He further emphasised the importance of squad balance, adding, "You need to have a good mix, good stability players, and players that can play with more freedom. And if we get that balance right, and we get those special players in the right positions, with good control, I think that we will be more competitive with the ball and against the ball."
Rogers' versatility is also highlighted as a key asset, expected to contribute not only on the pitch but also in fostering team cohesion. Alonso elaborated, "If we get those connections right, those little associations between them that they look for each other and they connect well, I think that it will be a great step forward in the quality of our game." Rogers recently registered an assist for Anthony Gordon in England's World Cup semi-final defeat by Argentina earlier this month, showcasing his international pedigree.
Chelsea's Premier League campaign is set to commence on 24 August with an away fixture against Fulham at Craven Cottage. Their first home game will be the following week against Brighton & Hove Albion, before a challenging encounter with defending champions Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on 6 September.
