The UK is bracing for a sweltering heatwave as temperatures are set to soar to 36°C, prompting widespread amber alerts across England and Wales. Forecasters warn that the extreme conditions will have far-reaching impacts on public health, transport networks, and daily life.
In England, the amber alert covers vast areas, including London and the South East, the Midlands, and parts of the North West, where temperatures are expected to consistently exceed 30°C, with peak values potentially reaching 36°C in urban centres and sheltered valleys. Wales is also under an amber alert, with similar high temperatures forecast for southern and eastern regions.
The prolonged heatwave poses substantial health risks, particularly for vulnerable populations such as the elderly, young children, and individuals with pre-existing medical conditions. The UK Health Security Agency has advised the public to stay hydrated, seek shade during the hottest parts of the day, and check on neighbours and relatives who may be at risk.
Transport networks are also expected to be severely impacted, with rail services potentially implementing speed restrictions to prevent tracks from buckling in the extreme heat. Road surfaces could be affected too, with drivers advised to ensure their vehicles are in good condition, particularly tyres and cooling systems.
The Met Office warns that the heatwave could persist for several days, before a potential break or reduction in intensity towards the end of the week or early next weekend, as cooler, more unsettled weather fronts may begin to move in from the Atlantic. With little air movement expected across the affected areas, the high temperatures will feel even more oppressive.
