The city of Amdavad, also known as Ahmedabad, in Gujarat, India, is set to host the next Commonwealth Games with a budget of £300m. This figure is double the £150m budget of the recent Glasgow Games, which concluded on Sunday.
The upcoming Games are viewed as a dress rehearsal for India's ambition to stage the Olympic Games for the first time. India has developed a bid for the 2036 Olympic Games, proposing Ahmedabad as the host city. Other nations, including South Africa, Qatar, Istanbul, and Chile, have also submitted bids for the 2036 Games.
The increased budget for the Amdavad Games is expected to allow for the inclusion of sports where India traditionally excels, such as field hockey, wrestling, archery, shooting, and squash, which were not part of the smaller Glasgow Games. There are also reports that sports like 3x3 basketball, cycling, and rugby sevens could return to the programme, and India has the right to add two regional or specialist sports, with kabaddi being a likely choice.
