An amendment to establish a national commission to examine proportional representation (PR) systems will be brought before Parliament next Wednesday during the final stages of the representation of the people bill. The proposed commission would explore which PR system would best suit the UK.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham is noted as a long-term advocate for electoral reform. The amendment reportedly has significant backing within the House of Commons, the Labour party, and among the public.
This development follows recent YouGov voting intention figures, which place Reform at 23%, Labour at 22%, and the Tories at 20%. The Green Party and Liberal Democrats are both on 13%, with the SNP and Plaid Cymru also holding influence in Scotland and Wales respectively.
Despite this, a minority view within the Labour party, cabinet, and party bureaucracy is reportedly opposed to PR, preferring Labour to govern alone.
