Social media influencers Andrew and Tristan Tate are to remain in jail for at least two more weeks, a federal judge said on Monday. The brothers are fighting extradition to the United Kingdom, where they are accused of rape and sex trafficking.
US magistrate Lauren Louis has set a detention hearing for 13 August. This hearing will determine whether the Tates should be released or remain in jail during the extradition process, which could last for months.
The brothers were not required to be in court on Monday and have been in jail since a brief court appearance two days after their arrest on 18 July.
Attorneys for the Tates stated on Monday that they want the US government to provide documents submitted by UK officials to secure their arrest. A US attorney, Alejandra Lopez, said in court that the UK has until mid-September to provide all its materials to the state department.
Prosecutors in Britain said the new charges relate to four new accusers, with allegations spanning from 2010 to 2017. These include rape, assault, trafficking, and offences related to "indecent images of a child and extreme pornography." The brothers are already charged with rape, bodily harm, human trafficking, and controlling prostitution for gain in the UK, relating to three other accusers between 2012 and 2015.
