Andrew Cole, an inspirational foreign languages teacher, has died at the age of 60 after suffering from brain cancer. He was known for his dedication to enthusing young people to learn languages and connect with different cultures.

Mr Cole taught at George Stephenson high school in Killingworth and later at Whitley Bay high school. He retired in 2023. His classroom was notable for its walls, which were covered with various French objects, from football programmes to supermarket advertising posters.

He played a role in developing Whitley Bay high school's national reputation for innovative teaching. Staff training sessions he was involved in were described as creative, sometimes involving unusual activities like lying in a bed on a stage or throwing custard pies, but always with a clear learning objective.

Born in Dartford, Kent, Mr Cole studied French and German at Liverpool University. After graduating, he spent a year in Paris studying at the Sorbonne before undertaking teacher training.
