Andy Burnham has reportedly withdrawn his support for a cap on political donations, a measure previously aimed at limiting the influence of large donors. This change in stance occurred before parliament had convened under his premiership.
According to reports, the decision to drop support for the funding cap followed opposition from the union lobby. This has led to criticism from individuals who had supported such measures for years.
Paul Sawbridge, writing in The Guardian, suggested that Mr Burnham should support Stella Creasy’s amendment and commit to a national commission on electoral reform. Marcus Hallside highlighted the historical precedent of union influence in leadership elections, citing the 2010 Labour leadership contest where union mobilisation was described as crucial.
The GMB union reportedly argues that a cap on donations could negatively affect Labour's ability to raise funds from affiliated organisations. However, Hallside stated that political finance rules should reduce the influence of money and organised interests, regardless of their source.
