The revelation that former teacher Stephen Harrington had to coax him into applying to Cambridge University highlights not only the politician's academic potential but also the pivotal role of mentorship in shaping the lives of those who have gone on to lead.
According to Harrington, Burnham, then 16 and in his first year of sixth form at St Aelred's Catholic High School in Newton-Le-Willows, Merseyside, in 1986, lacked confidence in his academic potential. This self-doubt was compounded by the perception that Cambridge was out of reach for a 'working-class boy' like himself.
Harrington recounted how he had to persuade Burnham to apply to the prestigious institution, drawing on the teenager's cricket achievements and encouraging him to pursue English Literature at Fitzwilliam College. Notably, Harrington introduced Burnham to the work of poet Tony Harrison, whose writing touched on working-class themes and political division. This exposure helped Burnham see that literature was not solely reserved for the middle classes, ultimately influencing his decision to study English.
After graduating with a 2:1 from Cambridge in 1990, Burnham has credited Harrington with boosting his self-belief at a crucial stage in his life. Their enduring connection extends beyond the confines of teacher and pupil; Harrington's son jokingly suggests that his father 'changed history' by encouraging Burnham.
