Ann Widdecombe, a former Conservative minister who later became a well-known reality television personality and Brexit Party MEP, has died at the age of 78. A leading voice on the right of British politics for decades, Widdecombe was known for her uncompromising views and distinctive public persona, which garnered both admiration and criticism throughout her long career.
First elected as the Member of Parliament for Maidstone in 1987, Widdecombe served in the House of Commons for over 20 years. During her time in government, she held various ministerial positions, including a notable tenure as Prisons Minister in the mid-1990s. Following the 1997 general election, she served in William Hague's Shadow Cabinet as Shadow Health Secretary and later as Shadow Home Secretary. She was a staunch social conservative, holding firm stances against abortion, assisted dying, and gay rights, while also advocating for the reintroduction of the death penalty.
Despite her traditional political leanings, Widdecombe surprised many by embarking on a successful second career in entertainment after retiring from Parliament in 2010. Her memorable appearance on BBC's Strictly Come Dancing in 2010, where she was partnered with Anton Du Beke, saw her reach the ninth week of the competition, endearing her to a new generation of the public. This foray into showbiz also included stints on Celebrity Big Brother and pantomime roles, showcasing a different side to her often serious public image.
Beyond her political and entertainment careers, Widdecombe was a vocal animal lover, a position that sometimes set her apart from her Conservative colleagues, notably in her opposition to fox-hunting. She dedicated a section of her website, the 'Widdyweb', to her pet cats and was a patron of a donkey sanctuary, reflecting a deep commitment to animal welfare.
In her later political life, Widdecombe became a prominent figure in the Brexit movement. She was elected as a Brexit Party MEP for South West England in the 2019 European Parliament election, serving until the UK's departure from the European Union at the end of January 2020. Her political journey concluded with a period as a member of Reform UK, the successor to the Brexit Party. In 2013, she was recognised with a papal honour, being made a Dame of the Order of St Gregory, acknowledging her services to politics and public life, particularly her advocacy on issues aligned with Catholic teachings.
