Anthony Gordon's full Barcelona debut justifies £70m fee

Anthony Gordon impressed on his first Barcelona start in a 2-0 win over Athletic Club, following two assists in his debut cameo against Elche. His performances are beginning to justify his £70m price tag.

  • Gordon provided two assists within six minutes of his debut cameo against Elche, which Barcelona won 5-0.
  • In his first start, a 2-0 home win over Athletic Club, Gordon received a standing ovation when substituted in the 80th minute.
  • Barcelona paid £70m for Gordon, a fee some questioned but which now appears to represent value in the current winger market.

Anthony Gordon looked at home on his full Barcelona debut, helping the side to a 2-0 win over Athletic Club at the Spotify Camp Nou. The 25-year-old had already set the tone with two assists in six minutes as a substitute in the 5-0 win over Elche last weekend.

Against Athletic, Gordon provided early intensity and pressed the opposition out of possession twice inside the first two minutes. His movement created space for attacking colleagues Lamine Yamal and Raphinha, and he was a constant threat, though he blazed over his best chance early in the second half.

Gordon was booked-worthy for a crunching tackle on Yeray Alvarez and received an animated warning from the referee, but the home fans lapped it up. When his number went up in the 80th minute, he received a standing ovation and they were already chanting his name.

His replacement, Karim Adeyemi, set up Barcelona's second goal within two minutes of coming on, a reminder of the stiff competition at the club. But Barcelona have invested in Gordon to be a top star, and his £70m fee is reflective of that.

Why this matters: Gordon's early performances suggest Barcelona have secured a player who can thrive on the biggest stage, justifying a fee that was initially questioned.
