Sir Anthony Hopkins, the acclaimed Welsh actor, has embarked on a new artistic venture, signing a record deal with Decca Classics and releasing his debut single, 'Bracken Road'. This musical foray marks a significant turn for the 86-year-old, whose lifelong passion for composition is now being brought to a wider audience. The single precedes his first album, 'Life Is A Dream', which is scheduled for release on 21st August.
'Bracken Road' is said to draw inspiration from Hopkins' childhood memories of Margam, South Wales, in the 1940s. He originally penned the piece in 1963 while working as an actor at the Liverpool Playhouse, highlighting the deep roots of his musical ambition. The album itself will feature orchestral music composed by Hopkins over six decades, performed by the distinguished Philharmonia Orchestra under the baton of conductor Gustavo Dudamel, with soloists including cellist Gregorio Nieto and classical pianist Sergio Tiempo.
In a statement, Hopkins expressed his profound connection to music, describing it as his "first desire" and a pursuit he has engaged in throughout his life. He noted that some of the compositions have been with him for decades, reflecting a deep personal journey. He also conveyed his honour at signing with Decca, calling it a privilege to collaborate with such esteemed musicians and acknowledging Dudamel's artistry in transforming his notes into a "pictorial landscape".
This move into classical music comes after a period where Hopkins has remained prominent in the acting world, notably winning his second Best Actor Oscar in 2021 for 'The Father'. His career, which has spanned over six decades, has seen him become one of Britain's most respected actors, earning numerous accolades including a BAFTA Fellowship. This new chapter offers a rare glimpse into another facet of his creative genius, one that has been cultivated privately for much of his life.
The album's release is anticipated to be a unique cultural event, offering listeners insight into the inner world of a celebrated figure known primarily for his dramatic performances. His compositions are expected to reflect the depth and introspection often seen in his acting roles, but through a different artistic lens. The collaboration with internationally renowned musicians and a prestigious classical label like Decca Classics underscores the serious intent behind this musical endeavour.
