Despite being a smaller model than Fable 5, Opus 5 has demonstrated superior performance in several key benchmark tests. This launch comes swiftly after Opus 4.8, which became available on 28 May 2026. The rapid succession of updates indicates Anthropic's aggressive development cycle, with Mythos 5, Fable 5, and Sonnet 5 all having launched in June 2026, leaving only the lightweight Haiku model awaiting its upgrade to the 5 series.

Anthropic emphasised that the model is "much stronger at verifying its work and iterating carefully until it succeeds."
