Spending on Anthropic subscriptions has surpassed OpenAI in the UK for the first time, according to fresh data. Analysis shared exclusively with City AM indicates that Anthropic accounted for 54 per cent of all UK business spending on AI firms in the three months to July, while OpenAI held 27 per cent.
This marks a shift from the first quarter of the year, when OpenAI accounted for 42 per cent of businesses' AI spend compared to Anthropic's 34 per cent. The data, which analysed spending trends from hundreds of thousands of Capital on Tap business customers, suggests a waning dominance for OpenAI in the AI market.
The data also highlighted a surge in AI adoption across UK businesses. Over one in eight companies spent money on AI firm services in the second quarter of the year, a rise from just one in twenty at the beginning of last year. Capital on Tap chief executive Damian Brycy noted that adoption is accelerating and could increase threefold from current levels.
The average quarterly AI spend for Capital on Tap's small and medium-sized business customers was £288. However, this figure was significantly influenced by heavy adoption among the top percentile of customers, whose quarterly AI spend exceeded £3,000.
