Anthropic has confirmed it will watermark text generated by its AI models, including Claude, to comply with European regulations. The company updated its support page to announce the move.
The EU AI Act's Transparency Code, which took effect on August 2, requires AI companies to mark AI-generated or edited content in a way that other systems can identify. Anthropic said all models released after that date will automatically include technology to watermark both text and files, using the C2PA open standard for files.
The company said it will extend support for older models as well. According to the support page, the watermark is part of the text, so it will travel when copied and pasted elsewhere and may persist through some editing. It will be applied at the model level, meaning it will be present regardless of which Claude product or surface the text comes from.
It is not yet clear how much editing would remove the watermark. Anthropic has been asked to clarify.
The watermarking will apply to products including the Claude platform API, Claude, Claude Code, Claude Cowork, and Claude Tag. Other companies, including Google, Meta, Microsoft, OpenAI, and Synthesia, have also committed to adhering to the EU's code.
