Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli has secured pole position for the Belgian Grand Prix, delivering a remarkably confident performance at the Spa-Francorchamps circuit. The 19-year-old Italian teenager demonstrated exceptional control and pace, setting a time of 1 minute 44.361 seconds to comfortably beat Red Bull's Max Verstappen.
Antonelli's impressive lap marked the largest pole advantage seen this season, with a margin of 0.317 seconds over Verstappen. Notably, Verstappen benefited from a significant tow from his teammate Isack Hadjar, who sacrificed his own qualifying laps due to a substantial grid penalty. Despite this strategic advantage, the Dutchman was unable to match Antonelli's speed, acknowledging that without the tow, he could have been much further down the grid.
The pole position is a crucial boost for Antonelli, who has experienced a run of bad luck in recent races, including a battery failure in Spain and a wheel-shield failure at Silverstone. These issues had seen his championship lead over teammate George Russell narrow from 64 points to 25. His performance in Belgium suggests a return to the dominant form he displayed earlier in the season, giving him an excellent chance to extend his lead on Sunday.
George Russell, Antonelli's Mercedes teammate, qualified in fourth place, half a second adrift. Russell expressed frustration with ongoing straight-line speed issues that have plagued him since the Austrian Grand Prix. McLaren's Lando Norris initially secured third fastest time but will start from 13th on the grid due to a 10-place penalty for using a fourth battery unit, exceeding the permitted allocation for the season. This means Russell will share the second row with Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, who moves up due to Norris's penalty.
Mercedes' unbeaten run in qualifying this season continues, with Antonelli securing his sixth pole from ten meetings. The team's consistent single-lap performance, despite numerous upgrades across the grid, highlights their strong package. Antonelli will be hoping to convert this pole into his sixth victory of the season, aiming to avoid any further technical misfortunes that have hampered his recent races.
