Private equity firm Apollo Global Management has confirmed a data breach in which hackers stole personal information from the company's cloud systems. The incident was confirmed in a letter filed with California's attorney general.
Matthew Breitfelder, Apollo's human resources chief, stated that hackers gained access to the company's cloud environment between July 6 and July 10 through a social engineering attack. The stolen data includes names, birth dates, contact information such as home addresses, and Social Security numbers.
The confirmation of the hack comes weeks after security researchers at Google warned of a new hacking campaign targeting financial and private equity giants. Google reported that these hackers, known by various names including Falcon and Helix, primarily use social engineering attacks, often impersonating IT helpdesks to trick employees into revealing login credentials.
