Apple unveils Home Collection smart home devices

Apple has announced a new range of smart home accessories, including a smart lock, video doorbell, thermostat, temperature sensor and security cameras, designed to work with its new HomeView hub.

  • The Apple Home Collection includes a smart deadbolt lock, video doorbell, thermostat, temperature sensor and security cameras.
  • The devices work with HomeView, Apple's new smart home hub for controlling accessories and interacting with Apple software.
  • The products will be available in December.

Apple has announced a new range of smart home accessories called the Apple Home Collection. The line-up includes a smart deadbolt lock, a video doorbell, a thermostat, a temperature sensor and a range of security cameras.

The devices are designed to work with HomeView, Apple's new smart home hub, which can be used to control connected accessories and interact with Apple's software.

Apple says the devices were built in partnership with LG Electronics and Schneider Electric. The smart lock is priced at $349.95 and supports ultra-wideband (UWB), a wireless technology that enables more precise proximity detection than traditional Bluetooth. This could allow the lock to recognise when an authorised user approaches and automatically unlock the door.

The wired video doorbell costs $249.95 and will let homeowners see who is outside, monitor visitors and receive notifications when someone approaches. When someone rings it, a chime will sound through Apple devices such as HomeView, HomePod and HomePod mini, and users will also be notified on their iPhone or iPad.

The temperature sensor can provide insight into conditions in individual rooms, helping users identify temperature differences between areas and make adjustments. For security, Apple is also introducing indoor and outdoor cameras, as well as a floodlight camera priced at $399.95 that combines exterior lighting with video monitoring. The camera lineup includes features such as live viewing, motion detection, intelligent alerts and video storage.

The new range could help Apple compete better with Amazon Ring and Google Nest, two established players in connected home security. The products will become available in December.
