Apple's 'Hide My Email' feature, designed to enhance user privacy by generating disposable email addresses, has reportedly been compromised by a significant bug. According to security researcher Tyler Murphy, the flaw could render the tool effectively useless, potentially exposing users' true email addresses despite their attempts at online anonymity.
Murphy, co-founder of data-removal service EasyOptOuts, claims to have discovered the vulnerability over a year ago and says he informed Apple at that time. However, it remains unclear why the tech giant has yet to implement a fix. The researcher told 404 Media that all attempts to exploit the bug in limited tests were successful, stating, "in our limited tests with volunteers, 100% of Hide My Email addresses were exploitable." Details of the vulnerability have been withheld from public disclosure to prevent widespread exploitation.
The implications of such a bug could be substantial for users relying on the feature for personal safety and privacy. Murphy highlighted that readily available people-search sites can easily link an email address to other personal details, potentially putting individuals who depend on 'Hide My Email' at risk. In 2022, the company was sued following reports that iPhone apps continued to transmit analytics data even when the 'iPhone Analytics' privacy setting was disabled. Similarly, in 2023, researchers found another Apple privacy feature, intended to anonymise Wi-Fi connections through randomised MAC addresses, was reportedly exposing users' real MAC addresses instead, rendering it ineffective.
