A major shock to climate scientists: Arctic sea ice decline accelerates again, after a brief slowdown, with the largest wintertime drop ever recorded. Research from the University of Southampton reveals that what seemed like a reprieve from ice loss was merely a temporary fluctuation in a broader trend.
Just two years ago, a study noted a slowdown in Arctic sea ice melting between 2005 and 2024, despite rising global temperatures. Researchers attributed this to natural variations in ocean currents limiting ice melt, but warned it was likely a temporary phenomenon that would resume with increased pace within five to ten years.
Now, the latest research confirms this was indeed a temporary reprieve, using satellite observations from 1979 onwards. Dr Duo Chan, lead author, says the slowdown “appears to have been just a temporary slowdown within a longer-term decline.” The sea ice area in September has halved since records began.
The study highlights a particularly stark reduction between 2024 and 2025, with Arctic sea ice declining by 5.8%. This represents the largest year-to-year wintertime drop ever recorded. Dr Alessandro Silvano describes this sharp decline as unusual but physically consistent with the ongoing warming of the Arctic region.
The implications are significant: winter sea ice acts as a crucial insulator, separating the relatively warmer Arctic Ocean from the much colder atmosphere. A reduction in this ice cover allows more ocean heat and moisture to enter the atmosphere, influencing pressure patterns, storms, and large-scale atmospheric circulation – potentially affecting weather systems much farther south, including in the UK.
Dr Chan stresses that short-term recoveries can obscure the longer-term direction of Arctic sea ice change. The low winter sea ice extents in 2025 and 2026 show that Arctic sea ice loss has not stopped – it is continuing in a warming climate, he warns.
