A substantial new solar farm has been officially inaugurated at Larkhill Garrison in Wiltshire, marking a significant stride in the Army's efforts to enhance its energy independence and sustainability. This large-scale installation, spanning 2.5 hectares – equivalent to more than three football pitches – is equipped with over 4,000 photovoltaic (PV) panels, poised to generate approximately 1.7 GWh of electricity each year. This output is sufficient to power around 630 average UK homes annually, demonstrating a considerable boost to the garrison's energy capabilities.

The project, delivered by Aspire Defence Services Ltd on behalf of the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) and funded through the Army's Project Prometheus, is a key component of a broader initiative to integrate both rooftop and ground-mounted solar technology across suitable Army sites. Beyond supplying Larkhill's daily operations, any excess electricity generated will be redistributed via a private wire network to neighbouring military camps at Bulford, Tidworth, and Perham Down.
