Arsenal Women have pulled off a major coup, snatching Spanish international full-back Ona Batlle from European champions Barcelona on a free transfer. The 27-year-old ace has been lured to North London with the promise of silverware, and she's clearly up for the challenge – after all, she's got the trophy haul to prove it!
Batlle brings a wealth of experience to the Emirates, boasting an impressive record during her three-year stint at the Catalan club. She made 114 appearances, chipping in with 14 goals, and was instrumental in Barcelona's dominance, helping them win no fewer than three league titles, three Spanish Cups, three Spanish Super Cups, and two UEFA Women's Champions League titles. Not to mention her starring role in Spain's World Cup triumph and European Championship final appearance.
This transfer marks the latest high-profile departure from Barcelona, following Alexia Putellas and Mapi León's confirmed moves to London City Lionesses – with Salma Paralluelo's next destination yet to be revealed. All four players were part of Spain's starting XI that dismantled England 4-0 in June.
Batlle's journey has taken her from Barcelona, where she began her career in the academy, to Manchester United on loan – where she racked up 77 appearances and gained valuable experience in the Women's Super League. Her versatility allows her to excel at both right-back and left-back, making her a prized asset for Arsenal.
Over the moon about her new signing, Batlle told Arsenal's media channels, “I’m very happy and excited to get going. Arsenal is one of the biggest clubs in the world and I can’t wait to feel the joy of playing in front of our supporters. I want to win trophies and I feel this is the right place to achieve that.”
Renée Slegers, Arsenal's head coach, was effusive in his praise for Batlle: “She’s a hugely experienced full-back with strong attacking intent and great physical attributes. She’s a winner and we want to go for more wins together.”
Batlle joins an impressive array of new recruits, including Georgia Stanway, Selina Cerci, and Geraldine Reuteler, all of whom have arrived on free transfers from Bundesliga teams. The Gunners' strategy is clear: assemble a squad capable of dominating both domestically and in Europe.
