Artists Will Huxley and Garrett are set to present their 'Bloodlines' exhibition at the Brisbane Powerhouse. The exhibition will run from 21 October to 8 November as part of the Melt festival.
Huxley and Garrett have been working, living, and creating together for two decades, focusing their art on queer romance and joy. Their work aims to conjure what they describe as their own queer utopia.
Huxley, who graduated from film school at the Victorian College of the Arts in 2006, met Garrett in Melbourne. Their relationship began during a period of personal change for Huxley, who was coming out at the time.
Garrett once gave Huxley a cow's heart covered in fake blood for Valentine's Day, an act Huxley described as dramatic and macabre, intended to test his reaction. This event, along with Garrett's theatricality, influenced their artistic connection.
Their art also incorporates Garrett's First Nations heritage and Huxley's previously hidden queerness, which they find healing and beautiful to share.
